Kirkwood project showcase Traverse Designs & Commitment to Improving Spectator Experience

When Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, began looking at upgrading their bleachers and press boxes for their baseball and softball fields, they turned to the experienced professionals at Traverse Landscape Architects.

Through a series of meetings with the grounds staff and feedback from the athletics department and others, several design options were developed, vetted, and reviewed for the development of a preferred proposed design. The process included review and analysis of the existing bleachers as well as alternate design options for new bleachers along with new press boxes.

The new press box includes tiered sections for home and visitor coaches, media and filming decks. The press box is designed for a maximum capacity of 14 stations and for operable windows both in the front and back. As a conditioned space, the press box is an independent structure and is accessible by a set of stairs separate from the bleachers.

Kirkwood Community College’s bleachers also needed to be modified in order to be compliant with accessibility codes. The bleachers lacked the necessary handrails to meet code, and these areas needed to be modified to accommodate requirements for a new ramp. The addition of 2 wheelchair spaces with companion seating to each seat of bleachers provided necessary elevated accessible seating options. Additional improvements to bleachers included painting and covering of existing seating.

In addition, the existing baseball and softball bleachers were replaced with a new aluminum mitered bleacher system that wraps the corners of the backstops. The new bleachers are designed to maximize spectator sight lines to the greatest extent possible with the existing dugouts. The old 128 seat capacity at each field was replaced with a more spacious, yet efficient, layout of higher seating capacity to meet demand.

The new system provides a deeper row depth than the old bleachers and allows for the installation of chair back seating in the future. As expected, the bleacher system improvements included all necessary sidewalk, ramps, and stairs required.

Applying efficient designs based on our recent track record of building similar sports facilities, we were able to keep on the project on time and on budget. This helped both Traverse Midwest and Kirwood reach our goals to improve the overall spectator experience.
